Shah Rukh Khan’s explosive 2012 altercation at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium—one of the Indian Premier League’s most controversial off-field moments—has resurfaced, with former Assistant Commissioner of Police Iqbal Shaikh now calling it a case of “miscommunication” that spiralled out of control.Recounting the high-voltage night, Shaikh revealed he was on duty when the situation escalated shortly after the match ended, following a minor disagreement between security personnel and the actor’s group.“It was more of a miscommunication involving Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) officials. I was the divisional ACP of the area where Wankhede Stadium falls, which is why I was present there. When I reached the main gate, an MCA colleague informed me that Shah Rukh ne raada kar diya (Shah Rukh Khan was creating a scene).
By then, the match had ended, most people had left, and even a few floodlights had been switched off,” he said in an interview with Subhojit Ghosh.
‘The argument became heated’
What began as a routine objection soon snowballed into a tense face-off, with raised voices and mounting tension inside the stadium.“Shah Rukh Khan and some children with him were playing on one side. A security guard objected and blew a whistle, which upset him. There was some exchange of words, and then MCA officials also intervened.
The argument became heated, and the atmosphere was worsening when I stepped in,” Shaikh recalled. With tempers flaring, the officer said swift action was needed to prevent the situation from turning uglier.“I immediately escorted Shah Rukh out of the stadium to prevent the situation from escalating further. I told him directly, ‘Sir, please step outside.’ Otherwise, things could have worsened unnecessarily.”

What exactly happened that night at Wankhede
The flashpoint came after Kolkata Knight Riders defeated Mumbai Indians, but the post-match drama quickly overshadowed the on-field result. Visuals of an agitated Shah Rukh Khan arguing with security staff went viral, fuelling allegations from MCA officials of misconduct and leading to a police complaint.Shah Rukh, however, consistently denied wrongdoing, stating he reacted after children—including his own—were allegedly mishandled.
He later admitted to losing his temper, citing a remark he found offensive in the presence of his kids as the trigger. The fallout was swift and severe as a five-year ban was imposed by the Mumbai Cricket Association from entering Wankhede Stadium and its premises—though it was lifted after three years. In the aftermath, Shah Rukh struck a reflective note, thanking the MCA for its “graciousness” and underlining that grace ultimately mattered more than who was right or wrong.
