A 20-year-old engineering student from Himachal Pradesh was found dead in his hostel room at Jawaharlal Nehru Engineering College in Sundar Nagar, Mandi district. The student, identified as Arpit from Bhoranj in Hamirpur district, allegedly died by suicide on Friday night. The incident came to light on Saturday morning when his body was discovered.
Arpit’s mother has accused Lavanya, a fellow student, of coercing her son into a sexual relationship, which she claims drove him to suicide. In her complaint, Arpit’s mother stated that a girl named Lavanya had been blackmailing and mentally harassing her son. She also claimed that Arpit confided in her before his death that Lavanya had been forcing him into a physical relationship.
On Friday night, Arpit was alone in his hostel room when he allegedly died by suicide. The incident came to light on Saturday morning. A suicide note was found in his pocket, in which he accused Lavanya of abetting his suicide. Police have since arrested her. Notably, the accused also studies at the same college.
Arpit was the only son of his parents and had a younger sister. In her police complaint, his mother also criticised the college management for its handling of his health condition when he contracted chickenpox earlier in May. The college had reportedly asked him to leave the hostel, forcing him to stay at the PWD rest house in Sundar Nagar from May 4 to 8.
Arpit’s mother claimed that the college management offered no support, forcing her to travel from Hamirpur and stay with their son at the rest house.
Police have seized CCTV footage from the hostel as part of the ongoing investigation. DSP Sundarnagar Bharat Bhushan confirmed that a case has been registered and said Lavanya was initially placed in police remand and has now been sent to judicial custody. The family has also filed a formal complaint with the police.
A report by India Today states that the forensic team has gathered evidence from the site. Authorities mentioned that the investigation is still in progress, and the claims made by the victim’s family are also under review.
