A man in Gorakhpur confessed to police that he felt “no regret" after shooting his wife dead, claiming she was “eating away all his money." The accused, identified as Vishwakarma Chauhan, gunned down his wife Mamta Chauhan in a crowded market on Wednesday evening. CCTV footage showed the couple arguing outside a photo studio before Vishwakarma Chauhan pulled out a pistol and fired two rounds. One bullet hit Mamta in the chest and another struck her hand. She collapsed on the spot and was declared dead on arrival at a nearby hospital.
Police arrested Vishwakarma Chauhan shortly after the shooting. An illegal pistol, three live cartridges and two empty shells were recovered from his possession, officials said. He has been charged with murder.
According to investigators, the couple had been married for 14 years and were going through divorce proceedings. Mamta, who worked at a private firm on Bank Road, had been demanding child support and the transfer of farmland before agreeing to a settlement.
The couple has a 13-year-old daughter, who was living with Mamta in rented accommodation in Shahpur’s Geeta Vatika area. Mamta was originally from Khajni, while Vishwakarma Chauhan lived separately in a rented house on Jail Road.
