There are very few romantic roles for people in my age group

Shefali Shah on being typecast, chasing love stories, and finding her space on OTT

Over three decades, Shefali Shah has moved seamlessly from theatre to television, films, and now OTT—building an impressive body of work. From early breakthroughs in Satya and Monsoon Wedding to the international acclaim of Delhi Crime, she has navigated the industry’s shifts with patience.

Known for intense performances, the actress says she is open to lighter genres too. “I’m a greedy actor. I want to do everything. I want to do a romantic film, a black comedy, a thriller, a horror—you name it. I love romance. I’m a hardcore romantic, though very few people know that. But there are very few romantic roles for people in my age group. When you think of love, you think of 18-year-olds, but there’s so much more to it,” she says talking to Mumbai Mirror.Looking back at her unplanned career trajectory, the actress recalls, “It started very incidentally with a play. Then I got offered Gujarati theatre, then serials and then films. None of it was planned—it just happened. I once played 35 at the age of 20. This industry boxes you. There’s no problem with playing a mother’s role, but earlier it meant just supporting the hero’s story, but now it has changed as supporting roles are also written well.
