Shivangi Verma on World No Tobacco Day; says ‘There’s nothing cool about harming your body’

Actress Shivangi Verma has spoken out candidly ahead of World No Tobacco Day, which falls on May 31, shedding light on the increasing normalization of smoking, especially among the youth.

In a culture where tobacco use is often seen as a symbol of rebellion or confidence, Shivangi offers a much-needed reality check.“Yes, sadly, I do feel that smoking has become a ‘cool’ tag for many people, especially among the younger crowd,” she said. “It’s like a badge some wear to feel more accepted or bold. But honestly, there’s nothing cool about harming your body. True confidence doesn’t come from holding a cigarette—it comes from being comfortable in your own skin.”Highlighting how smoking, once discreet, has now become visible across genders and public spaces, she added, “A lot has changed with time—our exposure to media, social behavior, peer influence. We need to be more mindful of what we’re normalizing in our social spaces.”On on-screen portrayals, Shivangi admitted, “I have strong reservations about it. I feel very responsible about what I portray, and personally, I prefer avoiding such scenes unless it’s absolutely necessary for the story.”

She also commented on health warnings during smoking scenes: “Those messages are a start, but I don’t think they’re enough. Real awareness comes from open conversations and storytelling that shows the real damage.”Speaking on anti-smoking ads, she said, “Yes, they do leave an impact, especially when you see someone struggling because of tobacco use. But we need to be consistent with these reminders.”Touching on the rising popularity of hookah, she said, “Hookah has this image of being ‘fun’ or ‘fancy.’

There’s a need to break that casual attitude.”Shivangi concluded, “It’s time we start celebrating health and self-love more than unhealthy trends.”

She has starred in Tera Ishq Mera Fitoor, Choti Sarrdaarni, Badass Ravi Kumar, and will next be seen in Gaurishankar Gauharganj Wale.
