In a significant religious and archaeological development, a large Shivling was unearthed during excavation work near the Mahakaleshwar Temple in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain on Friday morning. The discovery occurred as part of ongoing construction and land-clearing efforts linked to preparations for the Simhastha Kumbh Mela 2028.

The find has generated widespread interest and devotion among officials, priests, and local residents, many of whom gathered at the site soon after to offer prayers and water to the sacred structure.

The Shivling was discovered early in the morning while heavy machinery was being used to level the ground for the temple’s expansion project.

According to those present, the excavation work was immediately halted after the structure came to light, and authorities were informed.

The Simhastha Kumbh Mela is scheduled between late March and May 2028 with major rituals around Mesha Sankranti in April that year.

Extensive infrastructure upgrades and beautification projects are currently underway in anticipation of the massive influx.

"During construction near the prepaid booth during excavation, we discovered a Shivling, following which the construction work has been slowed down. If we unearth more remains, due process will be followed", Ashish Phalwadiya, Assistant Administrator at Mahakaleshwar Temple, said.

"It is indeed an auspicious occasion today (Buddh Purnima). We are taking complete care with regard to taking further steps," he added.

Providing details of the moment of discovery, Naresh Prajapati, the machine operator involved in the excavation, said, "The shivling was unearthed while the excavation was underway at around 4 am today. So, we paused the work and informed the administration. Officials arrived around 4.15 am and recovered the artefact".

Following the discovery, the site quickly became a focal point for devotees and locals.

Priests and residents described the moment as spiritually significant, reflecting the deep-rooted religious importance of Ujjain, a city long associated with Lord Shiva and ancient traditions.

"We have come here to pay homage to the Shivling that has been found during excavation. It is a very special moment. This is the same place of Baba Mahakaal (Ujjain). And in every corner, there are Baba Mahakaal and Shiva's remains. In the same way, it is amazing to see Shivling today. And it is about our Sanatan Dharma culture and tradition," Mahakaleshwar Temple priest Akash Sharma said.

Echoing similar sentiments, a local resident shared the sense of collective excitement and reverence.

"People have been coming to Ujjain for many years. Today we are very lucky to have this statue of Baba. We have come here to see the idols that have been found here. Whenever there is an excavation, some idols are found here. Everyone enjoys seeing these idols," Lesh Mishra, a local, said after offering prayers.

Authorities indicated that the next step will involve a formal examination by the Department of Archaeology to determine the age and historical context of the Shivling.

Given Ujjain’s longstanding religious and historical legacy, the discovery could add another important chapter to the city’s heritage.

For now, the site remains both a place of devotion and careful observation as officials proceed with caution while continuing preparations for the grand Simhastha event.
