TRIGGER WARNING: This article contains references to drug addiction. In a stunning turn of events, Simon Jakops, the visionary producer behind the breakout Japanese girl group XG, and acclaimed singer-songwriter Chancellor find themselves at the center of a drug possession scandal in Japan.
The duo, along with two Avex Group employees, was arrested early Sunday morning at a Nagoya hotel, mere hours after XG's electrifying world tour concert in the city. Police seized four packets of cocaine and one of what they believe to be dried marijuana, igniting widespread concern for the future of XG's rising stardom.
Details regarding the jeopardy
The arrests unfolded around 12:20 a.m. on February 23, when Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department's Drug and Firearms Division raided the hotel room following a tip-off that sparked a year-long investigation starting in March 2025.
According to Tokyo Broadcasting System Television and Asahi Shimbun, "police entered the room following a tip-off and discovered multiple bags of cocaine and dried cannabis." Yomiuri Shimbun Online reported that the 39-year-old Simon, real name Junho Sakai, and Chancellor, born Michael Kim or Kim Jung-seung, were taken into custody alongside the Avex executives.Simon had been in Nagoya to oversee XG's performance as part of their second world tour, a show that drew massive crowds and highlighted the group's global appeal.
Authorities transported the suspects to Tokyo for intense questioning by 8 a.m., probing how the drugs were obtained, if they were used, and any potential conspiracy. It remains unclear if they have admitted to the charges, but the incident has sent shockwaves through fans still buzzing from the concert.
Agency response and careers in jeopardy
