The Palakkad Railway Division launched a new MEMU service between Shoranur and Nilambur. Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs George Kurian flagged off the new train service at Shoranur on Saturday night.

V.K. Sreekandan, MP, and P. Mammikutty, MLA, were the guests at the inaugural function.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Kurian said that Railways were committed to improving services and facilities for the people of Kerala. He said that the new MEMU service would strengthen regional connectivity and provide passengers safe and reliable travel options.

The new MEMU service is expected to benefit thousands of passengers, especially office-goers, students and traders. MEMU was introduced following the electrification of the Shoranur–Nilambur section in December 2024. The new train’s trial run was done in February.

The new service will leave Shoranur at 8.35 p.m. and reach Nilambur Road at 10.05 p.m. In the reverse direction, it will leave Nilambur at 3.45 a.m. and reach Shoranur at 4.55 a.m.

Schedule change sought

However, there are demands from passenger groups to revise the schedule. Passengers want the train to leave Shoranur at 9.15 p.m. so that it will benefit the passengers of several long-distance trains.

Apart from the MEMU service, the Shoranur-Nilambur section witnessed several developments. Shoranur Junction, Angadipuram and Nilambur Road stations are being upgraded with modern passenger facilities under the Amrit Bharat scheme.

Two new crossing stations are also under construction at Kulukkallur and Melattur. Railway officials said that the new crossing stations would enhance operational efficiency by enabling Railways to handle 23-coach trains.

Palakkad Divisional Railway Manager Madhukar Roat welcomed the gathering. Additional Divisional Manager S. Jayakrishnan proposed a vote of thanks.

BJP leader P.K. Krishnadas, Shoranur municipal chairman M.K. Jayaprakash and several civic body members attended the function.
