US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he will not attend the 2025 G20 Summit scheduled to be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, claiming the country “shouldn’t even be in the Gs anymore." Trump made the remarks while addressing the America Business Forum in Miami, reiterating his criticism of South Africa, which he had previously accused in May of committing “white genocide."

South Africa currently holds the G20 presidency under the forum’s rotating chairmanship. Trump said the country did not deserve membership in the group “because of what’s happened there," without explicitly elaborating on what he was referring to.

The US President’s comments echo his administration’s recent policy moves. His government has restricted the number of refugees allowed into the United States to 7,500 per year, with a provision that most of those admitted would be white South Africans.

According to the BBC, a notice from the administration stated that these admissions would “primarily" be allocated to Afrikaner South Africans and “other victims of illegal or unjust discrimination in their respective homelands."

“For generations, Miami has been a haven for those fleeing communist tyranny in South Africa," Trump told the gathering. “If you take a look at what’s going on in parts of South Africa — it’s bad. You know, we have a G20 meeting in South Africa. South Africa shouldn’t even be in the Gs anymore. Because what’s happened there is bad. I’m not going."

In May, Trump had criticised South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and alleged that white farmers in his nation were being killed and “persecuted".

Afrikaners are white South Africans primarily descended from Dutch settlers who colonised the region during the 17th and 18th centuries.

They are not an unfamiliar name in India as some of South Africa’s most celebrated cricketers, including Hansie Cronje, AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis, come from Afrikaner families. Their prominence serves as a reminder that white South Africans form a distinct cultural community within the country’s diverse population.

In May, nearly 60 white South Africans were granted refugee status in the US and resettled, despite Trump having suspended the refugee programme after returning to office.
