Indian-origin Congressman Ro Khanna has reacted to the murder of a motel manager in Texas and said that the accused had several criminal records, and he should not have been freed.

Taking to X, the US representative from California called the incident “horrific". He wrote, “The brutal beheading of a hardworking Indian American immigrant in front of his wife & son is horrific. The murderer had multiple prior arrests for violent theft and child endangerment and was undocumented. He should not have been free on American streets."

His post comes after a Cuban citizen, identified as Yordanis Cobos-Martinez, was arrested for beheading Indian-origin motel manager Chandra Nagamallaiah. He was killed in front of his wife and son following a dispute over a broken washing machine.

The accused has a prior criminal record in the Dallas County Jail. He was recently released from jail in January.

Gory CCTV footage of the incident is also going viral online. It shows Cobos-Martinez retrieving a machete and attacking Nagamallaiah.

The victim runs towards his motel office, where his wife and son are present. They reportedly tried to intervene several times, but the accused did not stop and continued the assault.

Another video shows the victim’s head being kicked twice before the accused carries it casually to a dumpster and places it inside.

Cobos-Martine is currently being held without a bond, which means that he could be sentenced to life imprisonment without parole or the death penalty if convicted.

He reportedly confessed to the crime.

The Consulate General of India, earlier, also reacted to the incident and said,"We are in touch with the family and offering all possible assistance. The accused is in the custody of Dallas Police."
