Shower of love & applause as WC star Uma returns home

Guwahati: Assam’s pride, Uma Chetry, returned home to a rousing welcome after being part of India’s victorious squad at the Women’s Cricket World Cup and becoming the first cricketer from the state to play a world cup.The young wicketkeeper-batter from Kandulimari village in Golaghat district was greeted by cheering fans, proud officials, and well-wishers, who gathered to celebrate her historic achievement at her village.She is the second woman from Golaghat to earn global sporting recognition, following Olympic bronze medallist boxer Lovlina Borgohain.Uma arrived at Guwahati’s Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi Airport late Thursday night, where crowds showered her with flowers, applause, and heartfelt congratulations.“Winning the World Cup is a dream for every player. Coming from the northeast and achieving this dream feels truly special,” Uma told reporters at her home.“When I started playing, I was supported by my parents, coaches, and friends. Youngsters must not be discouraged by setbacks. With practice and discipline, they can overcome any challenge,” Uma added.Raised in a humble farming family, Uma’s journey has been one of grit and determination.

She credited her upbringing for instilling resilience and thanked the people of Assam for their overwhelming love and support.Her arrival in Golaghat was marked by tears of joy as her mother, Dipa Chetry, embraced her daughter with pride. “It’s a surreal moment. When she made me wear the medal, I couldn’t hold back my tears. I pray she continues to shine,” the proud mother said.District officials, including commissioner Pulak Mahanta and SP Rajen Singh, welcomed Uma with a traditional gamosa, xorai, and a bouquet. “Uma is our pride. The entire district stands behind her. We congratulate her and wish her greater success,” Mahanta said.
