India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been admitted to a Sydney hospital after medical reports revealed internal bleeding from a rib cage injury.

The Indian board after consultation with its medical team decided to admit Iyer again in the hospital as a precautionary measure.

“It’s a freak injury and medical team is in touch with the hospital. The medical team had advised him to be admitted again as there is bleeding in his rib cage. We are expecting him to be fine later this week,” a BCCI official said.

Iyer got injured during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney while taking a stunning running catch to dismiss Australian batsman Alex Carey. He had to run behind from point and after taking catch, hurt his rib while tumbling down to contact the grass.

He didn’t field for the remainder of the innings and was rushed to hospital after he complained of severe pain in his ribs.

Iyer’s career has been marred by injury for quite some time now.

The Indian middle-order batsman had earlier written to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that he will be taking a ‘break from red ball cricket’ for some time due to stiffness and fatigue issues in his back. The board had accepted his request.
