US President Donald Trump used strong language while pressuring Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to accept a ceasefire with Hamas, according to a new book by journalists Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan.

The claim appears in the book Regime Change: Inside the Imperial Presidency of Donald Trump, which offers an inside account of Trump’s second presidency and his dealings with world leaders.

According to the book, the heated phone call took place during negotiations for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Tensions reportedly escalated after Israel carried out an airstrike in Qatar, where Hamas chief negotiator Khalil al-Hayya and a delegation that included his son were engaged in talks over a potential ceasefire agreement.

The strike reportedly angered Trump, who was pushing for a US-mediated truce and viewed the operation as a setback to ongoing diplomatic efforts.

The authors claim that during a call with Netanyahu, Trump expressed frustration over the Israeli leader’s actions and urged him to accept the ceasefire proposal.

“I’ve done everything to protect you. You better go along with this. It’s been going on for too long. Everybody’s sick of you, Bibi," Trump allegedly told Netanyahu, according to excerpts from the book.

The conversation reportedly took place while a session of the United Nations General Assembly was underway.

The book further claims that Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, and his son-in-law Jared Kushner were also on the call. Trump allegedly invoked their support while making his case to the Israeli leader.

According to the authors, Trump told Netanyahu that even some of his closest Jewish allies were frustrated with the prolonged conflict and wanted a ceasefire agreement to be reached.

The book claims that Netanyahu eventually accepted the US-backed ceasefire proposal and apologised for the strike in Qatar.

In another revelation, Haberman and Swan write that Trump later described Netanyahu as “crazy" after Israel launched strikes on Lebanon’s capital, Beirut, at a time when the Trump administration was engaged in delicate negotiations with Iran.

According to the authors, Trump believed the military action risked undermining broader regional diplomacy and escalating tensions in the Middle East.

The book also alleges that Trump reminded Netanyahu of his political support for Israel and warned that he was shielding the Israeli leader from growing international pressure, including allegations related to wartime conduct.

Neither the White House nor Netanyahu’s office has immediately responded publicly to the specific claims made in the book.

The revelations are likely to draw significant attention given Trump’s close relationship with Netanyahu during both his first and second terms in office, as well as Washington’s central role in efforts to broker ceasefires and de-escalate conflicts across the Middle East.
