Silence period begins in Nagaland’s Koridang ahead of by-election

Dimapur: A mandatory 48-hour silence period will begin in the 28-Koridang assembly constituency of Mokokchung district after campaigning ends at 4pm on April 7, ahead of the by-election.Mokokchung deputy commissioner and district magistrate Ajit Kumar Verma issued an order prohibiting all forms of public campaigning and movement of non-voters during the final 48 hours before polling.The order bans public meetings, rallies, and processions post-deadline, and restricts the display of election-related content via electronic media, including television and similar platforms. It also prohibits campaign-linked entertainment such as musical concerts or theatrical performances aimed at influencing voters.Political functionaries, party workers, and individuals brought in from outside who are not registered voters of the constituency must leave the area immediately after campaigning ends. Their continued presence, the order stated, could compromise the conduct of free and fair elections. Strict compliance has been directed, with violations punishable by up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.The district magistrate has tasked the returning officer, assistant returning officers, magistrates, police, and security personnel with enforcing the restrictions and ensuring non-electors exit the constituency after the campaign deadline.
