Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan on Wednesday questioned the government over the name of Operation Sindoor and said vermilion has been wiped off the foreheads of women whose husbands were killed in the Pahalgam terror attack.

“I must congratulate you (Ruling Party) , for appointing such writers who give such grand names. But why did you name it ‘Sindoor’? The sindoor has been wiped off the foreheads of women whose husbands were killed," Bachchan said in the Rajya Sabha during the debate on Operation Sindoor.

BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said sindoor is a symbol of power and capability.

“Now Prithiviraj Chavan is not alone. Just think what kind of mentality this is. They question Operation Mahadev’s name and call it communal…. Jaya Bachchan ji, terrorists wiped off the Sindoor of women. Sindoor is a symbol of power and capability. To send this message, the operation was named Operation Sindoor…. It is sad," he said.

Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan earlier called out the BJP for naming operations after religious symbols.

“They know nothing except naming operations after religious symbols. They inject religious fundamentalism into everything they do. They are trying to polarise the situation into a Hindu versus Muslim conflict," he said.

BJP C R Kesavan called Chavan’s remark “most deplorable."

“Most deplorable and shocking remarks by Senior Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan, who says the names Operation Sindoor and Operation Mahadev denote religious fundamentalism. For the Communal Congress sacred Sindoor and Lord Mahadev symbolise polarisation ? What an appalling wretched mindset. सत्यमेव जयते [Satyameva Jayate ] inscribed on out national symbol is from the Mundaka Upanishad. The motto of the Indian Navy शं नो वरुणः" (Sham No Varunah)’’ Is from the Rig Veda. So for the Communal Congress are सत्यमेव जयते and शं नो वरुणः signs of religious fundamentalism ? Shame on the Congress party and Mr. Prithviraj Chavan ought to apologise to the armed forces and our nation immediately else it will go onto prove the entire Congress leadership agrees with his dangerous divisive mentality," the BJP leader wrote on X.
