Congress candidates Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Vem Narender Reddy in all likelihood will be elected unanimously for the two vacancies in Rajya Sabha from Telangana as they were the only ones to have filed the nomination with proper documents and 10 proposers.
An independent named Sai also filed the nomination papers but his papers will be rejected as the documents are not proper and there are no proposers as well. The scrutiny will be done on March 6 and the result will be announced on March 9.
Both the Congressmen submitted their papers to Election Officer Upender Reddy in the Assembly. They were accompanied by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, TPCC president B. Mahesh Kumar Goud, Ministers, MPs, MLAs and MLCs. Earlier, Mr. Goud handed over B Forms to the candidates on behalf of the party.
The BRS toyed with the idea of fielding a candidate initially but stayed away given the shortage of numbers and also fearing some cross voting if there was a contest. In that case there would have been a contest.
The candidates met the AICC chief Mallikarjun Kharge, who was in Hyderabad to attend the marriage of Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka’s son on Thursday.
Later, speaking to reporters, Mr. Singhvi said he would be indented to Telangana for giving the opportunity to him for the second time. He is the outgoing member after serving for a brief period elected for the vacancy of K Kesava Rao, who resigned from Rajya Sabha after joining the Congress party from the BRS in 2024.
Mr Singhvi thanked Mr. Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and KC Venugopal, and all the Telangana leaders who supported his nomination. Mr. Vem Narender Reddy also thanked Mr. Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, and also Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy for giving him the opportunity. Mr. Narender Reddy’s name was cleared late on Wednesday after consultations with the party leaders. The name of Singhvi was cleared much earlier.
