In a massive exercise, more than five crore voter forms were distributed in a single day as part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls being conducted in nine states and three Union territories, the Election Commission (EC) said on Thursday.
According to a daily bulletin released by the poll body, over 42 crore SIR enumeration forms have so far been handed out to electors in 12 states and UTs. This marks significant progress, covering roughly 82.7 per cent of the 50.99 crore eligible voters in these regions.
A previous bulletin on Wednesday had reported that over 37 crore forms had been distributed by 3 pm on November 12.
The states and Union territories participating in this phase are Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Lakshadweep. Among these, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, and West Bengal are scheduled to hold elections in 2026. Assam, which also has polls due in 2026, will have its electoral roll revision announced separately.
Phase-II of the SIR began on November 4 with the distribution of forms and will continue until December 4. The EC plans to release the draft electoral rolls on December 9, with the final rolls scheduled for publication on February 7.
While the ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal and the DMK in Tamil Nadu have criticised the SIR, alleging that it could disenfranchise eligible voters due to lack of documents, the EC has clarified procedures to ensure inclusivity.
Following the Bihar exercise, Aadhaar cards have been included among the indicative documents required in the 12 states and UTs.
The EC has instructed electoral registration officers to issue notices to voters whose previous SIR details are missing or do not match the database. Electors can submit supporting documents under different categories after the form distribution stage if requested.
