PATNA: Six people were detained for questioning on Monday after a man was shot dead during a violent clash between two groups over a land dispute in Muzaffarpur district.The altercation occurred late on Sunday night in Koria Nizamat village under the Paru police station area.According to police, two brothers, Jitendra Bhagat (41) and Jay Prakash Bhagat (44), were shot during the clash. Jitendra later succumbed to his injuries. A total of six people were injured, with members from both groups sustaining wounds.The dispute reportedly revolved around 30 katha of land and escalated into violence when armed assailants allegedly attacked the two brothers. Jitendra was fatally shot, and Jay Prakash survived the attack.Jay Prakash stated that the confrontation began around 10:30 pm while he was walking near a shop, about 50 metres from his house.Paru Station House Officer (SHO) Monu Kumar said, “The attackers, reportedly led by Arvind Bhagat, Raju Bhagat, Ravi Bhushan Kushwaha, and others, were armed with sticks, swords, and firearms. Both parties are related and live nearby. Around 15 rounds were fired during the incident."The injured were first taken to Paru PHC and later shifted to Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH), where Jitendra was declared dead from a bullet wound to the abdomen.
He had been working for a private company in Kolkata.Other injured individuals include Mahesh Kumar (48), Narendra Kumar (39), Prince Kumar (21), and Ravi Bhushan Kumar (32). All are currently receiving treatment at SKMCH.“The land dispute had been ongoing for several years, despite earlier efforts to resolve it through land measurement. We are conducting an independent investigation. However, no formal written complaint has been lodged so far. Six suspects have been detained for questioning, and additional security has been deployed in the area to prevent further unrest,” the SHO added.
