An Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) in West Bengal’s Ranaghat made a controversial remark about women consuming alcohol.

The remark by Laltu Halder came while he was addressing a public event in the city.

Speaking at a gathering, Halder said he feels “ashamed" to witness women drinking liquor in public during a procession.

“I feel ashamed to say this. In your procession, young women were seen drinking alcohol while standing on the road. If this is considered the glory of a procession, then I condemn such a procession," he could be heard saying in a widely shared video on social media.

He went on to make remarks linking women’s conduct to social order, saying, “Men are bound to behave mischievously."

“It is women’s duty to restrain them. But now, it is the women themselves who are drinking and creating chaos. As a result, society is heading towards ruin," he remarked.
