Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones just turned 83, but it’s not his birthday that’s got everyone talking. Jones, known for decades of bold yet baffling remarks, once again found himself under fire — this time from ESPN’s Stephen A.
Smith, who questioned whether the longtime Cowboys boss has lost touch with reality after his latest comments about the team’s defense.
Stephen A. Smith questions if Cowboys owner has lost his mind
The Cowboys’ 2-3-1 start to the season has raised plenty of concerns, but the biggest head-scratcher came from Jones himself. Despite the defense ranking among the worst in the league, the team owner confidently declared, “Where we are potentially our strongest is pass rush.”
Those words stunned fans, especially considering that Dallas traded away star pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers after refusing to negotiate a new deal. Since then, the Cowboys have allowed the most passing yards and are tied for the most passing touchdowns in the NFL. Yet, Jones seems convinced that the defensive line remains the team’s greatest asset.Smith didn’t hold back his disbelief during ESPN’s First Take, where he wished Jones a happy birthday before bluntly adding, “Something’s wrong with him.”
“This man will double down with the best of them,” Smith said. “You traded Micah Parsons. Clearly it was not the wisest thing to do. Of course it was going to compromise your pass rush... Total yards — dead last. Scoring — 31st. Passing yards — dead last. Third downs — dead last.
The only thing you’re decent at is against the rush, and that’s not decent because you’re 25th.”
Cowboys fans share Smith’s frustration
For many fans, Smith only said what they’ve been thinking for weeks. The Cowboys’ defensive collapse has been glaring, and Jones’ refusal to acknowledge the issue feels like denial. His unwavering confidence might once have been endearing, but now it’s being seen as stubbornness that hurts the franchise.Smith even revealed he has expressed his concern directly to Jones, saying he’s “worried about him.” It’s not the first time the outspoken analyst has gone after the Cowboys owner, but his comments this time hit differently — because, for once, much of the NFL world seems to agree. At 83, Jerry Jones remains one of the most powerful figures in football. But as Stephen A. Smith made clear, power doesn’t always mean perspective — and Cowboys fans are left wondering when reality will catch up in Dallas. Also Read: "I made a mistake": Tua Tagovailoa tries to mend fences with emotional apology — but questions remain inside Dolphins camp
