A love story that began in the quiet corridors of a plywood factory ended in a complicated love triangle with the chilling murder of Raja Raghuvanshi in Shillong, Meghalaya. What started as a romantic honeymoon for newlywed Raja and his wife Sonam Raghuvanshi became the stage for a meticulously plotted betrayal, one allegedly orchestrated by Sonam and her lover.
Just days after their grand wedding in Indore, Raja and Sonam set off for Shillong, a popular tourist destination in the Meghalaya. But within days, both went missing. Then, on June 2, Raja’s body was discovered in a roadside ditch in Shillong, sending shockwaves through both his family and local authorities.
Seventeen days after the disappearance, when police finally traced Sonam, the case took a dramatic and unexpected turn. Investigators claimed that she confessed the honeymoon was a trap, one carefully planned with her lover Raj Kushwaha to eliminate Raja.
Sonam Raghuvanshi-Raja Kushwaha Affair
The roots of the triangle go back to Indore, where Sonam was working in her father’s plywood business after completing her education. Among her colleagues was Raj Kushwaha, a man five years her junior, who not only worked in the same factory but lived in her neighbourhood. The proximity led to a romantic relationship between the two.
Despite this, Sonam went ahead and married Raja Raghuvanshi, a man five years older than her, in what appeared to be a conventional arranged match. But police allege that even as wedding rituals unfolded, Sonam and Raj were plotting Raja’s downfall.
Raj, according to investigators, was the mastermind. It is believed he roped in a group of associates to help him execute the murder. The plan? Use the honeymoon trip to stage Raja’s disappearance and death, far from the eyes of suspicious family members and close friends.
While the crime was allegedly committed in Shillong, its echoes are being felt strongly in Indore where Raja’s family resides, and Ghazipur where Sonam was apprehended. Raja’s mother said she grew suspicious after seeing a gold chain around his neck, something she believed could have been used to lure or trap him. “There was something unusual in Sonam’s last call to us," she said, adding that now everything was making sense.
Neighbours and relatives who knew Sonam are stunned. “She was always polite, well-mannered, and educated," said a neighbour, expressing bisbelief.
Now in police custody, Sonam is set to be brought to Ghazipur on transit remand. However, in a twist, she has claimed innocence, declaring herself a victim, not a conspirator. This statement has raised fresh questions: Was she manipulated by Raj? Or is this an attempt to escape the charges?
For now, Raj Kushwaha, believed to be the key architect of the murder, is absconding. Meghalaya Police are working with counterparts in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh to track him down.
