With the southwest monsoon in active mode once again, heavy rainfall is expected to lash Kerala through this week, indicate weather forecasts.

Isolated heavy rainfall can be expected in most of the central and northern districts till at least July 24, a district-level, five-day forecast of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicates. The weather agency has put Ernakulam, Thrissur, Idukki, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, Wayanad and Kasaragod on yellow alert for isolated heavy rainfall on Monday. No heavy rainfall alert has been issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha and Kottayam on Monday, as per a 4 p.m. update on Sunday.

Fishers have been advised not to venture out to sea till July 22 as squally weather is likely to persist along and off the Kerala coast.

The IMD noted that an upper-air cyclonic circulation persists over west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal off south Odisha and north coastal Andhra Pradesh. A fresh low pressure area is likely to form over the north Bay of Bengal around July 24.
