Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday condemned the violent assault on Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee during a visit to a TMC worker’s house in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas, questioning the lack of police personnel in the area.

Abhishek Banerjee faced a hostile protest on Saturday during his high-profile visit to Sonarpur, where an agitated crowd heckled and hurled stones and eggs at the MP while he was visiting the house of a TMC worker who was killed in the post-poll violence in Bengal.

An angry crowd confronted Abhishek Banerjee and also chanted “chor chor" slogans against him. Banerjee was seen in a torn white shirt and a cricket helmet, walking through several people who pushed and grabbed him. The MP’s security detail formed a protective cordon around him to escort him. Banerjee later accused the BJP of orchestrating the incident.

INDIA Bloc Allies Condemns Attack

Taking to X, Kharge condemned the “shocking attack" on Banerjee and questioned the lack of adequate police protection for the MP.

“The deliberate lack of adequate police protection for a prominent Opposition leader speaks volumes about the BJP’s politics of vendetta and persecution. The Government of West Bengal and the Union Government must ensure security for all Opposition leaders and take immediate steps to prevent such attacks. Political differences can never justify any kind of violence," he said.

Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav also accused the BJP of orchestrating a “murderous attack" on Banerjee. “The anarchic BJP government in Bengal has proven that the BJP is capable of nothing but hate-filled, negative, violent politics. Even in such a sensitive environment, the absence of police arrangements points to a major conspiracy," he said on X.

TMC MP Derek O’Brien also said Abhishek was lynched and attacked by BJP supporters and questioned why his security was withdrawn on the day of the West Bengal election results.

‘They Tried To Kill Me’

Addressing the media immediately after the incident, a defiant Abhishek Banerjee accused the BJP of orchestrating the unrest, calling it a clear example of their version of democracy. However, the BJP denied Banerjee’s allegations, saying the protests were a spontaneous manifestation of public anger against the opposition TMC’s local leadership.

Banerjee expressed deep frustration over the local administrative response, pointing out that even though it has not been a month since the election cycle concluded, the police were nowhere to be seen during the initial moments of the chaos.

“They wanted to kill me. The whole incident has been captured on camera. We will definitely let the High Court know about this. We will also let the governor know about this. I will definitely move to court," he told reporters.

“They threw a brick, threw an egg, and pelted stones. Please tell me what this is…. They hit my eye with a brick, and I can’t open my eye. He’s punched me in the back, chest, arm, and leg," Banerjee added.
