The Kerala Institute for Gender Equity to be launched at Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit (SSUS), Kalady, on June 20 will focus on advancing interdisciplinary research in gender studies.

The institute figured among the centres of excellence proposed by the Department of Higher Education focussing on specific areas of advanced research and training. These will be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and staffed by top-tier faculty members, researchers, and students.

The Kerala Institute for Gender Equity aims at integrating gender perspectives into policy-making, addressing gender inequalities, and sharing research outcomes with institutions and partners across the country, according to the varsity authorities.

Minister for Higher Education R. Bindu will inaugurate the institute at a function to be held on the Kalady campus on June 20.

A concept note prepared by the Kerala State Higher Education Council said that the centre of excellence would be an autonomous institution of advanced research in one of the leading-edge areas of specialisation, run by a team of highly motivated experts engaged in the production, application, and publication of new knowledge.

It is a physical centre of infrastructural capacity and resources to enable heavily collaborative research across disciplines, and focused on latent issues of local relevance but internationally challenging, it said.

The Commission for Reforms in Higher Education in Kerala, chaired by academic Shyam B. Menon, had proposed the setting up of centres of excellence to promote the creation of knowledge and development of skills suitable for an emerging knowledge society.
