In view of heavy rain received during the northeast monsoon, the discharge from the Chembarambakkam reservoir into the Adyar was increased to 945 cusecs on Friday. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin visited the Adyar estuary near Srinivasapuram and oversaw the works under way to facilitate the draining of runoff from nearby areas into the Bay of Bengal.
The Chief Minister advised officials to undertake steps such as employing additional machinery for widening and desilting the estuary to enable free flow of floodwaters.
Minister Ma. Subramanian, MLA N. Ezhilan, and officials from the Water Resources Department and Greater Chennai Corporation accompanied Mr. Stalin.
Water supply schemes
In another development, Municipal Administration Minister K.N. Nehru on Friday directed officials of the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board to resume at the soonest the operation of combined water supply schemes affected by floods and heavy northeast monsoon rainfall across the State to ensure adequate drinking water supply to residents.
A press release said he reviewed the progress of works undertaken by the TWAD to restore 89 combined water supply schemes in various districts. Of these, restoration is under way in remaining 33 schemes.
Mr. Nehru also reviewed the status of the ongoing 31 combined water supply schemes and 10 sewerage projects in Tamil Nadu. The TWAD Board supplies nearly 2,248 mld of water to 5.28 crore residents in the State., the release said.
