Kerala has successfully established a world-class transport infrastructure, marking a significant milestone in the State’s development journey, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said.

Speaking during the virtual inauguration of the newly constructed Kavanad Mukkattukadavu–Fatima Island and Fatima Island–Arulappan Thuruthu bridges, the Chief Minister highlighted the government’s commitment to modernizing the State’s connectivity. “The government has executed 17 major PWD projects with an investment of ₹541 crore. These initiatives include the construction of bridges, flyovers, causeways and culverts, alongside the upgrading of roads to international standards. Notably, the Alappuzha-Changanassery (AC) road has been redesigned to be flood-resilient, ensuring uninterrupted travel even during extreme weather conditions,” said Mr Vijayan who also pointed out the progress of coastal and hill highways, the completion of National Waterway reaches, and the stabilization of power supply through the Edamon-Kochi Power Highway. The ceremony, held at the Mukkad Church Parish Hall, was presided over by Sujith Vijayan Pillai, MLA. During the event, the MLA said that additional approach roads would be constructed to further enhance the connectivity between the islands. These projects are expected to significantly ease the daily commute for local residents and boost the region’s economic potential. The Mukkattukadavu–Fatima Island bridge spans 183.33 metres, while the Fatima Island–Arulappan Thuruthu bridge measures 78.6 metres. Both structures feature dedicated carriageways and pedestrian walkways to ensure safety and convenience. Built at a cost of ₹25.7 crore funded by KIIFB, the project also includes approach roads on both banks to streamline traffic flow.

Former Minister J. Mercykutty Amma, Mukkad parish assistant vicar Prashanth, Bridge Construction Beneficiary Committee secretary Joseph Tobias, author Edward Nazareth and former councillor Janet Honey were also present.
