The Telangana government is gearing up for procurement of foodgrain, including paddy produced during Kharif season from the farmers, after registering a record production of 148.03 lakh metric tonnes in this Kharif (2025) season.

The State set a record in the country by registering the highest-ever production in single season. The government is likely to spend around ₹23,000 crore for procurement of at least 80 lakh metric tonnes foodgrain from farmers, according to Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy.

The Minister, accompanied by Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao and Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao, conducted a video conference with senior officials and district collectors on Wednesday (October 15) to review the arrangements being made for procurement of foodgrains. The proactive polices adopted by the State government — headed by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy — resulted in the State registering the highest-ever production of foodgrains, he said.

He described the exercise as a sensitive issue and directed the district collectors to put in place a hassle-free process so that farmers are not put to any inconvenience. Telangana registered the highest-ever production of 148.03 lakh metric tonnes production and was heading to set a record by ensuring purchase of 80 lakh metric tonnes, including 40 lakh metric tonnes fine and coarse varieties each.

In all, 8,342 procurement centres would be set up across the State of which 4,259 centres would be operated by the primary agriculture cooperative societies, 3,517 IKP centres and 566 by other agencies. The district collectors should accordingly focus on creating adequate facilities at the procurement centres besides putting in place mechanism to transport the foodgrain procured from farmers to storage points. “There should be effective coordination between the district collectors and Civil Supplies officials,” he said stressing the need for putting in place necessary basic amenities at the procurement centres.

Mr. Uttam Kumar Reddy said the State government took the procurement process as a prestige and directed the district collectors to see that payments were made to farmers within 48 hours of procurement of the commodity. The government was firm on giving minimum support price and assured bonus of ₹500 a quintal for fine rice as part of procurement.

Over 1,200 procurement centres had already started functioning in Kamareddy, Nizamabad, Medak, Siddipet and Nalgonda districts and officials concerned should make arrangements to put in place necessary equipment and infrastructure required for the process. He directed the officials to ensure success of the process on the lines of previous year when effective coordination at different level yielded good results. In the process, officials could spend more funds wherever needed for making necessary arrangements and they should see that data pertaining to procurement was entered into the records timely.

Officials should also keep in mind the weather forecasts and make arrangements for necessary equipment to ensure that foodgrain was not drenched in case of untimely rains. Steps should be taken to see that the Civil Supplies commissioner was available in cases of emergency, he said adding he himself would be available to resolve difficulties, if any, encountered in the process.

Helpline number 1800-425-00333/1967 was made operational for farmers to contact officials in case they needed any help and the government had also set up special teams to supervise the process till procurement was completed.

Mr. Nageswara Rao said the State government withstood challenges for ensuring the success of the procurement process in the past two years.
