A large number of people gathered at Checkon–Nongmeibung area in Manipur’s Imphal East on Wednesday night, demanding justice over the killing of two children in the Tronglaobi incident.

The gathering saw a significant turnout of residents who came out voluntarily to protest over the killing. However, the situation later turned tense as some youths, from concealed positions, hurled stones and used catapults targeting security personnel.

The incident followed a march held earlier in the day from Kongba, with tensions carrying over into the night.

From the protesters’ side, tyres were burnt and stones were placed in the middle of the roads, causing serious inconvenience to commuters. Security forces fired tear gas shells and smoke to disperse the throng; however, the standoff continued till late night.

Meanwhile, security forces were deployed in large numbers across the area to maintain law and order. In several parts of the valley, similar protests were reported, with tensions soaring up at multiple locations.

Despite the crackdown, protests continued in multiple locations, reflecting growing unrest among the people.

What Sparked The Protests?

Fresh protests broke out across Manipur’s Valley region on Friday night, after massive crowds took to the streets in Imphal to protest against the killing of two children in the Tronglaobi incident.

On April 7, suspected militants from the hill areas dominated by the Kuki-Zo groups launched a bomb attack on a civilian house in Moirang Tronglaobi village, in the Bishnupur district, killing two children and sparking unrest in the region.

As tensions continued to flare in the region after the incident, the case was handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
