Stories shape values, says scholar Ganesh Devy

Dharwad: Renowned linguist and thinker Ganesh N Devy reflected on the enduring relevance of classical storytelling traditions, drawing connections between the works of Aesop, Edgar Allan Poe and Vishnu Sharma.Speaking at a function organised by the Children’s Academy and RK Foundation here, Devy spoke about the timeless fables of the Greek writer Aesop and said his short animal tales continue to influence generations as they present profound truths about human nature in a simple yet memorable manner. He observed that such stories have the power to shape values and leave a lasting impact on readers’ lives.Referring to Edgar Allan Poe’s 19th-century story “The Purloined Letter,” Devy remarked that modern life often causes people to overlook the importance of books and deeper reflection, even when wisdom lies in plain sight.He said the Panchatantra of Vishnu Sharma remains one of the finest examples of literature that blends entertainment with practical wisdom. Through animal characters and engaging narratives, the Panchatantra teaches not only moral values such as friendship, loyalty and honesty, but also leadership, diplomacy, intelligence and decision-making. Its stories continue to remain relevant as they encourage critical thinking and help readers understand human behaviour and the consequences of their actions.

Four books written by paediatrician Rajan Deshpande were dedicated on the occasion.Expressing concern over growing divisions in society, Devy criticised the culture of hatred and violence. He concluded by recalling Mahatma Gandhi’s interpretation of Christ’s sacrifice, stating that true greatness lies in forgiving others’ mistakes and embracing humanity with love and compassion.Writers Siddalinga Pattanshetti, Raghavendra Patil, Jaya Kurhekar of Sangli and MK Subrahmanya also spoke.
