The court was hearing a matter related to a 2013 suo motu PIL on potholes
Times News NetworkMumbai: The Bombay high court on Monday directed the BMC and other civic bodies to submit data on potholes and manholes and inform it about the steps taken regarding them.Justices Ajey Gadkari and Kamal Khata were hearing a matter related to a 2013 suo motu PIL on potholes. In Oct 2025, the HC directed compensation of Rs 6 lakh for death and between Rs 50,000 and Rs 2.5 lakh for injury. Advocate Ruju Thakker informed that, thereafter, there were a few incidents. She said in view of the approaching monsoon, civic bodies need to come up with data, including how many manholes are uncovered.Thakker had earlier flagged 19 deaths on Ghodbunder Road. But Thane Municipal Corporation’s advocate said it is not always due to potholes, but because of rash and negligent driving. Thakker said, “Ghodbunder Road is riddled with potholes, and residents are protesting.” Asking why no steps have been taken, Justice Khata said, “Don’t push the people to come on the streets.” The HC will hear the matter next on June 24.
