Delhi witnessed a sudden spell of rain on Friday evening, bringing relief from the intense heat that had gripped the city through the day. Light to moderate showers, along with gusty winds and cloud cover, led to a noticeable drop in temperatures across several parts of the national capital.
The change came after Delhi recorded its hottest day of the season, with the maximum temperature touching 41°C at Safdarjung. Other weather stations, including Palam, Ridge and Lodi Road, also reported above-normal temperatures, reflecting the strong heat conditions earlier in the day.
Sharp Drop After Peak Heat
By evening, the weather shifted quickly as clouds gathered and showers spread across the city. Many areas saw temperatures fall by 7–10 degrees Celsius, offering brief but significant relief from the heat.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) also upgraded its alert from yellow to orange, warning of moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and winds reaching up to 40–60 kmph during the night. The sudden rain marked a sharp contrast to the hot and dry conditions seen just hours earlier.
Reason Behind The Sudden Change
Weather experts say the sudden shift is likely linked to a weak western disturbance affecting north-western parts of the region. This system brought cloud cover and moisture towards Delhi, creating favourable conditions for rain and thunderstorms.
At the same time, dust and haze seen in the morning pointed to changing wind patterns. As winds picked up later in the day, they helped trigger storm activity across parts of the city.
The interaction between intense surface heat and moisture carried by the western disturbance often leads to such sudden weather changes during this time of year, especially in the pre-summer months.
Relief May Be Short-Lived
Despite the rain, the relief is expected to be temporary. Forecasts suggest that temperatures could rise again over the next two to three days, with the maximum likely to hover around 41–42°C. There is also a possibility of isolated heatwave conditions returning.
“Temperatures are expected to rise further across Delhi-NCR and northwest India over the next two to three days, potentially touching 41 to 42 degrees Celsius and leading to isolated heatwave conditions," Mahesh Palawat of Skymet told PTI.
For Saturday, the IMD has predicted a partly cloudy sky, with the maximum temperature likely around 41 degrees Celsius and the minimum around 21 degrees Celsius.
Meanwhile, Delhi’s air quality remained in the ‘poor’ category, with an AQI of 263, indicating that pollution levels continue to be a concern even as weather conditions fluctuate.
