Virat Kohli looked on course for his third ODI ton of the series, but he did not have enough runs in the chase to get there. However, he did not miss his opportunities in the first two games, scoring back-to-back tons. With his second ton in Raipur, now he has 84 international centuries, which is 16 away from what Sachin Tendulkar has achieved in his career. Different pundits and former players had diverse views on whether Kohli would be able to get there, but former Indian batter Sunil Gavaskar was confident that if Kohli were to play three more years, he would achieve the historic feat.
“Why not? Even if he plays for three more years, he needs 16 hundreds from here. The way he has been batting, he has scored two hundreds in a three-match series. Going forward, even if he scores two more against New Zealand in a three-match series, he will reach 87. So the chances of him getting to 100 are big, very good. The way he has been batting, he is enjoying himself,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports.
“See, he has a month’s break before the New Zealand ODIs. It remains to be seen what happens to his form in these few days. If that break was not there, I am sure he would score two or three hundreds in the series,” he added.
Earlier, Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra, though, threw in his view on his YouTube channel. “The big question is whether Kohli can score 100 centuries. He is 16 centuries away. He has scored back-to-back centuries, so it seems he will keep scoring and won’t stop. He can still play 35 to 40 matches by the end of the World Cup. So it seems like he should score them easily. Score a century in every second match, as he is scoring a century every day currently,” Chopra said.
