Nintendo has officially announced that Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 are making their way to the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 as part of Super Mario’s 40th anniversary celebrations.
Launching on October 2, 2025, the games will be available as a combined physical bundle or as separate digital purchases. Fans can expect enhanced visuals, including 4K resolution support on Switch 2, new gameplay features, and expanded storytelling through additional pages in Rosalina’s in-game storybook. This long-requested re-release marks the long-awaited return of Galaxy 2, which was previously absent from the 3D All-Stars collection.
Super Mario Galaxy re-release: What’s new
The updated editions of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 will include:
- 4K resolution on Switch 2 (with 1080p support on original Switch)
- Improved UI and control options with button, stick, or motion play
- A new assist mode for accessibility
- An in-game music player for fans to enjoy the soundtrack
- Extra pages in Rosalina’s storybook, adding deeper lore to her character
Rosalina’s expanded lore and the upcoming movie
One of the biggest surprises is the inclusion of new content in Rosalina’s storybook, a rare storytelling expansion for Nintendo. These new chapters are believed to connect to the Super Mario Galaxy movie, announced during the same Nintendo Direct. The film, a sequel to the 2023 hit Super Mario Bros. Movie, will release globally in April 2026, with returning voice actors and production by Universal Pictures and Illumination.
Amiibo and collector’s items
Accompanying the game launch are two new Super Mario Galaxy-themed amiibo, featuring Mario & Luma and Rosalina & Lumas. These will release later on April 2, 2026, providing in-game items like life and 1-up mushrooms. A hardcover edition of Rosalina’s storybook is also planned, featuring artwork and story elements from the games, though it won’t include the new Switch-exclusive pages.
Pricing and availability of Galaxy titles
The physical bundle, which includes both Galaxy titles, is priced at $69.99, while digital editions will be available individually at around $39.99 each.
The dual release ensures fans can either collect both games in one package or pick them up separately.
A long-awaited return
Fans have long demanded a re-release of Super Mario Galaxy 2, particularly after its absence from the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection. With improved visuals, expanded lore, and a tie-in to the upcoming movie, this release is shaping up to be one of the biggest Nintendo anniversaries yet.
