A three-judge Bench of the Supreme Court, comprising Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta and NV Anjaria, has begun hearing the case relating to the removal of stray dogs in Delhi-NCR.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the government, pointed out that children were dying and that sterilisation did not stop the mutilisation of children. “Dogs do not have to be killed.. they have to be separated. Parents cannot send children out to play. Young girls are mutilated," he told the bench.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal targeted the municipal corporation, saying that there were no shelters and questioned where the stray dogs would be kept. He asked for the earlier Supreme Court order to be stayed, highlighting concerns over the well-being of lakhs of stray dogs and animal protection laws.

On Monday, a bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan said that all localities should be made free of stray dogs and there should not be any compromise. It also made it clear that no captured animal will be released back on the streets. It also ordered contempt proceedings against any individual or organisation that attempts to obstruct the authorities from carrying out the capture drive.

After outrage from animal rights activists, Chief Justice of India, BR Gavai, assured that he would look into the case and referred it to a larger bench.
