The tragic Chevella road accident was discussed at length on Wednesday (November 03) at review meeting of the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety.
Chairman Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre and member Sanjay Bandopadhyay convened the meeting with officials from across departments in attendance. Discussions were held over the circumstances that led to the accident in which 19 people were killed after a lorry crashed into a bus of the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation.
Cyberabad Commissioner of Police Avinash Mohanty gave an account of the accident and the factors that led to it.
The Committee directed officials to verify the fitness of TGSRTC buses along those other buses and commercial vehicles, and seize all vehicles found without valid fitness certificates. Emphasis was laid on the Transport department ensuring that vehicles in the State have documentation in order, such as valid insurance papers, relevant permits and fitness certificates.
The Committee also directed the National Highways Authority of India to speed up the ongoing highway widening work. Mining and Transport department officials were instructed to ensure that vehicles do not carry loads beyond the permitted limits from mining quarries.
The Committee also suggested that the State government establish a dedicated Road Safety Fund. Transport Commissioner K. Ilambarithi, Additional DGP Mahesh Bhagwat, Cyberabad Commissioner of Police Avinash Mohanty, Mining Director Bhavesh Mishra and other officials attended the meeting.
RTA continues crackdown
In a separate development, the officials of the Road Transport Authority booked three lorries for allegedly carrying loads above the permissible limits. These include a lorry transporting 20 tons of dust, another carrying 13 tons of bricks and a third with nine tons of steel.
Further, within Hyderabad district, the RTA from October 1 to November 6, issued 1,318 vehicle check reports, collected ₹64,03,052 in compounding fee, and another ₹2,77,00,351 in taxes.
