Agra’s famed Petha industry faces a major crisis as the Supreme Court orders closure of all factories within the Taj Trapezium Zone to curb pollution around the Taj Mahal

Agra, the famed Petha Nagri, has long been known for its signature sweet that draws tourists from around the world. But the city’s bustling Petha trade, once thriving, is now staring at a major crisis.

The Supreme Court has mandated the removal of all Petha factories within the Taj Trapezium Zone (TTZ) to mitigate pollution affecting the Taj Mahal. Agra, home to numerous historical monuments including the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, and Fatehpur Sikri, is now required to devise a rehabilitation plan within three months, with the next Supreme Court hearing scheduled for September 23.

Following the Supreme Court’s order, Petha traders are in a state of panic. Speaking to Local18, Rajesh Agarwal, a prominent Petha businessman, expressed concerns, stating that traders are deeply worried and are frequently contacting the administration for assistance.

Despite efforts to maintain a pollution-free environment by switching to LPG gas instead of coal-operated furnaces, traders remain distressed. They have appealed to the Supreme Court, highlighting that Petha traders are small business owners who require consideration in the decision-making process.

This is not the first time the Petha industry has faced challenges. In 1996, environmental regulations led to a complete ban on coal usage by Petha factories in the TTZ. Again, in 2013, the court decided to prohibit all types of coal in the factories.

Young Petha traders, such as Shrey Agarwal, are particularly concerned about the increased difficulties. Speaking to Local18, Agarwal pointed out that while big businessmen might find ways to continue their operations, the poor will be the most affected. He emphasised the need for the Supreme Court to consider everyone’s problems before making a final decision.
