Additional Director General of Police H M Jayaram.
The Supreme Court will Wednesday hear a plea challenging the Madras High Court order directing the arrest of Tamil Nadu Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) H M Jayaram in connection with the alleged abduction of a teenage boy.
The matter was mentioned Tuesday before a bench of Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and Manmohan, which agreed to take it up Wednesday.
On Monday, the Madras High Court ordered the arrest of Jayaram, and criticised Kilvaithinankuppam (SC) MLA ‘Poovai’ M Jagan Moorthy for “misusing his political power” in connection with the alleged abduction case.
Justice P Velmurugan asked the Tamil Nadu Police to take ADGP Jayaram into custody, and proceed as per law. Justice Velmurugan also remarked that public servants like him were “answerable to the public”, and that a strong message must go out that “no one is above law”.
Jayaram was arrested after he came out of the court building.
The court, which was hearing Jagan Moorthy’s anticipatory bail petition in the afternoon session, refrained from granting any relief to the MLA and instead instructed him to cooperate fully with the investigation. The judge warned that if the MLA failed to do so, strict action would follow.
