The Supreme Court will hear on September 1 a plea by the RJD and others seeking a direction to the Election Commission of India to extend the time for filing claims in respect of those who have not been included in the draft voters’ list for Bihar during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls.

The application was mentioned before a bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi, which agreed to take it up on Monday.

Appearing for the Rashtriya Janata Dal, Advocates Prashant Bhushan and Shoeb Alam stated that the last date is currently September 1. Alam said the number of claims has exponentially increased, and more time was needed.

The bench asked why the applicants had not approached the Commission. “We have, but they are not extending,” said Bhushan.

The RJD has sought an extension of the timeline for filing claims of deleted electors by two weeks and to accept the claims of deleted voters till September 15.

Advocate Mohammed Nizam Pasha, who appeared for AIMIM MLA Akhtarul Iman, said 80,000 claims had been filed in the three weeks before the top court’s last order and 95,000 after that.

The Election Commission has said 7.24 crore voters made it to the draft electoral roll published on August 1. They have until September 1 to submit eligibility documents from a list of 11 indicated by the EC to make it onto the final roll, which will be published on September 30.
