Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray claimed on Sunday that a drone was observed near his home in Mumbai, sparking concerns over privacy and official protocols. According to Thackeray, the drone was seen peeping inside his residence before quickly departing when it was noticed by those present.
"A drone was caught peeping into our residence this morning and when the media learnt about it, the @MMRDAOfficial is saying it was a survey being done for BKC with permission of the Mumbai Police," Thackeray said. He shared his concerns publicly and questioned the intent behind the drone's actions.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) later clarified that the drone was part of a survey for the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and said it had obtained approval from Mumbai Police. Thackeray, however, doubted the explanation and pointed out the lack of communication with residents.
In response, Thackeray questioned, "What survey allows you to peep inside homes and fly out quickly when spotted?" He raised doubts about the legitimacy of the survey and the need for greater transparency.
"Why weren’t residents informed?" he asked, expressing concern over the lack of prior intimation to those living in the area.
Thackeray also inquired, “Is the MMRDA conducting surveillance only on our house for the entire BKC?” suggesting that his residence may have been singled out.
He then criticised the MMRDA’s functioning, stating, "The MMRDA should get on the ground and focus on the shams of its work, such as the MTHL (Atal Setu), which stands as an example of its corruption."
Thackeray continued, "Also, if the Police gave them permission, why weren't residents informed?" suggesting that procedural gaps persisted even if police approval was obtained.
He reiterated his scepticism, emphasising his call for transparency and accountability from both MMRDA and the police.
