A San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy was killed on Monday while responding to reports of an armed man threatening a woman in Rancho Cucamonga. This incident led to a high-speed chase that concluded dramatically on a Southern California freeway.

Deputy Andrew Nunez, who had served the department for six years, was identified as the officer who was killed.

According to a police release, Nunez leaves behind a two-year-old daughter and a pregnant wife. “We are deeply saddened," said Sheriff Shannon Dicus at a press briefing. “Sadly, this has become all too common for our department."

The confrontation began in the 12300 block of Hollyhock Drive, where Nunez and other deputies responded to reports of a man with a gun threatening a woman. Authorities stated that the suspect fired shots, fatally wounding Nunez before fleeing the scene on a motorcycle.

A region-wide pursuit followed, involving multiple law enforcement agencies. The police release indicated the suspect reached speeds exceeding 150 miles per hour (over 240 kmph) while fleeing eastbound on the 210 Freeway.

Video footage later showed an unmarked sheriff’s vehicle intentionally ramming the suspect’s motorcycle, causing him to fall and ending the chase. Officials described the maneuver as a “pursuit intervention technique," executed by a narcotics deputy from the department.

The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, was taken to a nearby hospital and remains in stable condition. Authorities plan to book him for murder once he is medically cleared.

The Los Angeles Times quoted Sheriff Dicus, who emphasised the department’s commitment to supporting Nunez’s family and ensuring the suspect faces justice. “Our deputies are devastated," he said. “We’ve lost not only a colleague but also a friend, a husband, and a father."

Deputy Nunez’s death is the latest in a series of violent incidents involving law enforcement in California’s Inland Empire, raising concerns about officer safety and the increasing risks of field response calls.
