Suspected honour killing in Madhepura, 3 arrested

Patna: Madhepura Police on Monday revealed a suspected case of honour killing, where a 20-year-old girl was allegedly killed by her father and uncle for having a relationship with a man of her choice.

They also said that her boyfriend allegedly strangled their newborn baby and threw the body from a bridge.A case was registered in the matter after both bodies were recovered from separate places on Feb 14. The case was disclosed when the DNA tests of the woman, her baby and the family members were conducted, which revealed the entire matter. All three accused, including the woman’s father, uncle and husband, were arrested and sent to jail, police said.The deceased were identified as Alka Kumari and her newborn baby girl. She was allegedly murdered by her father, Ambed Bharti, and uncle, Tapesh Bharti. The incident took place in ward no. 2 of Pipra Karauti village under Udakishunganj police station area of Madhepura district.Udakishunganj SDPO Avinash Kumar said: “Alka was in a relationship with Rishu Kumar (25) of the same village for over a year.”He said in June 2025, Alka became pregnant and next month she disclosed this to Rishu.

“Rishu pressured her to terminate the pregnancy, but Alka refused. Due to increasing tension, Alka later stopped talking to him,” he said.According to the cops, after six months, Alka’s parents came to know about her pregnancy. Her father and uncle planned her murder. However, Alka’s mother was by her side and was taking care of her. Due to his wife’s opposition, Ambed could not carry out the crime inside the house.On Feb 13, Alka gave birth to a baby girl at a hospital in Udakishunganj, but soon after, due to excessive bleeding, her father and uncle allegedly took her away, claiming they were taking her to another hospital.

Instead, they killed her and dumped the body in Naugachhiya (Bhagalpur).At that time, Alka’s mother was at the hospital with the baby. Later, Rishu took the baby away with him, killed her and dumped the body.“The story took a turn after Rishu was arrested on Feb 20. He revealed that Alka’s family members killed her. Additionally, he admitted that he threw the baby under the bridge on NH-106. On interrogation, Ambed and Tapesh confessed to their crime. The four-wheeler vehicle and cellphone used in the crime were also seized,” the SDPO added.
