Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra has hit back at assertions that her stance on West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has softened, clarifying that an interview clip circulating on social media was intentionally cherry-picked. The controversy erupted after a prominent commentator on social media platform X, operating under the handle “Subytweets", shared a snippet suggesting that Moitra’s tone towards Adhikari had changed dramatically. The user remarked that Adhikari was now being framed as “an angel" and speculated that either a political shift was underway or the clip lacked wider context.

Responding directly on X, the Krishnanagar MP strongly dismissed the insinuation of a political U-turn, urging observers to listen to the full interview rather than isolated excerpts. While acknowledging that she shared a positive working relationship with Adhikari prior to his high-profile exit from the TMC, Moitra emphasised that she has not spoken to him since he severed ties with the party. She underscored that while he chose to fight on an opposition ticket rather than sabotage from within, her remarks were descriptive of past events rather than an endorsement of his current politics.

Mamata loses another one. Till yesterday she was breathing fire on Suvendu. Now the tone has changed. Suvendu is an angel. She’s become a consummate politician. Or else this is a cherry picked clip from a larger context. I still applaud RaGa & INC team to have detected the signs… pic.twitter.com/xrF1yYy88p— Suby #ReleaseSanjivBhatt #Palestine #VoteChori (@Subytweets) June 24, 2026

Yes it is cherry picked pls listen to the full interview. Suvendu is no angel but he had the guts to leave & fight on their ticket unlike these traitors. And i had a good relationship with him while he was in our party but have never spoken to him since he left . Why make these…— Mahua Moitra (@MahuaMoitra) June 24, 2026

Internal Turbulence and Personal Revelations

The social media storm follows a detailed interview given by Moitra, in which she opened up about her early political journey and the emotional support she received from Adhikari when they were party colleagues. Moitra recalled her deep distress after being denied a Lok Sabha ticket in 2014, revealing that she had wept all night and that Adhikari was the one who offered reassurance. She also noted that when she contested her first assembly election from Karimpur in 2016, Adhikari was the only senior leader to actively campaign at her debut rally.

The timing of these recollections has amplified political chatter across West Bengal, a state currently navigating intense political realignments and internal dissent within the TMC since it was defeated in this year’s assembly elections by the Bharatiya Janata Party. A significant faction of rebel MLAs and a block of Lok Sabha MPs have created substantial friction in recent months for the TMC headed by Mamata Banerjee. Amid this backdrop, Moitra’s candid reflections on the structural differences between the cadre-based system of the ruling BJP and the leadership-dependent framework of the TMC have drawn heightened scrutiny.

A Defiant Stance on Party Loyalty

Despite the flurry of speculation regarding her political future, Moitra’s response on X serves to reinforce her ongoing allegiance to the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC camp’s core leadership while drawing a sharp line against internal rebellion. She contrasted Adhikari’s past decision to openly leave the party and contest on an alternative ticket with the actions of contemporary detractors, whom she explicitly labelled as “traitors" for destabilising the party from within.

Addressing broader rumours regarding the state’s shifting political landscape, Moitra also firmly dismissed any talk of a potential merger between Mamata’s TMC and the Congress. While acknowledging shared ideological ground between the two entities, she stated categorically that there was no truth to such reports.
