Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has condemned the suicide of Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, calling it a stark symbol of the “deepening social poison” crushing humanity in the name of caste.
In a series of tweets, Gandhi highlighted the broader implications of caste-based discrimination, writing that if a senior IPS officer is subjected to humiliation and atrocities due to his caste, one can only imagine the challenges faced by ordinary Dalits.
He referred to other incidents, including the murder of Hariom Valmiki in Raebareli and alleged disrespect towards the Chief Justice of India, to underline systemic injustices faced by marginalised communities. Gandhi accused the BJP-RSS of spreading hatred and a Manuvadi mindset, asserting that Dalits, Adivasis, Other Backward Classes, and Muslims are increasingly losing faith in the justice system.
“The struggle is not only Puran Kumar’s,” Gandhi tweeted. “It belongs to every Indian who believes in the Constitution, equality, and justice.”
Kumar, a senior Haryana IPS officer, reportedly faced repeated harassment and discrimination in service. His death has sparked a nationwide debate on caste-based bias, administrative harassment, and the mental health pressures faced by civil servants.
