Something huge is cooking in the Pittsburgh Steelers, and admirers are tense. Among the finest edge rushers in the league, T. J. Watt is caught in a contract disagreement with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
With training camp only weeks away and trade rumors circulating, all attention is now on how this scenario will play out and how much money it might cost to retain T. J. Watt in black and gold.
T.J. Watt skips minicamp as Steelers delay contract talks
T. J. Watt missed required minicamp with the Pittsburgh Steelers on June 11, 2025. Why? T. J. Watt wants a fresh contract extension before 2026, the year his current one expires, but it has not been settled. T. J. Watt might sign a three-year contract worth $121 million, with $81 million guaranteed, according to Gary Davenport of Bleacher Report.
If that happens, the 30-year-old would be the top paid non-quarterback in the NFL according to yearly income. That spot is currently held by Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase, who signed a four-year, $161 million deal in March 2025. T.J. Watt also reportedly wants more than Myles Garrett’s contract. The Cleveland Browns gave Myles Garrett a four-year, $160 million extension with $123 million guaranteed.
The Steelers are now in a tough position. Giving T.J. Watt a record deal would lock in their defensive leader for years, but at a very high price. Sources close to the team say they’re hesitant about a long deal due to T.J. Watt’s age and a slight dip in his performance during the 2024 season.
