The Coonoor Consumer Protection Association has suggested that the government choose a site for the soon-to-be-established Government arts and science college in Coonoor, which can be accessible to students from remote areas as well as for students from nearby Kundha taluk.
In his letter to the Chief Minister, S. Manogaran, president of the Association, stated that he had read reports of surveys being conducted for the proposed Government Arts College in Coonoor.
“If the college is set up around the Coonoor area, it would be difficult for students—especially boys and girls from the tea plantation areas, rural regions, and tribal settlements within the Coonoor taluk—to commute to the college everyday,” said Mr. Manogaran.
He added that Coonoor already had an old, established college where a thousand students were already studying. “Therefore, if the new college is established in any of the following locations within the Coonoor legislative constituency, it would greatly benefit students coming from the rural parts of Coonoor and the Kundah taluk,” he said, calling on the government to consider using the campus of the higher secondary schools at either Manjacombai or Melur Hosatty, which have very low student strengths.
He also suggested setting up the college in areas like Selas, Athigaratty and Melur Kaikatty, which are also easily accessible for students from Coonoor, Kundha and even Udhagamandalam taluks. Mr. Manogaran added that he believes that a college set up in these locations would bring the most benefit to residents of the Nilgiris constituency.
