Annamayya district administration has embarked on a strategic move to turn drug-free.
District Collector Sridhar Chamakuri chaired a high-level meeting of the District Narcotics Coordination Committee at the Collectorate here on Friday.
The Collector highlighted the urgent need for coordination among the line departments, including medical and health, police, revenue, education, forest and drugs control wings. He directed the officials to enforce surveillance at all border checkpoints and undertake awareness campaigns in all Intermediate and degree colleges across the district. He instructed the medical officers to report any cases of drug abuse encountered in hospitals to the police.
Village-level officers were told to report any known drug users and victims. The Collector urged the public to pass on any information related to drug trafficking or use via toll-free numbers: 1972, 1933, or 7382296118.
Additional SP M. Venkataadri said that 26 drug-related cases were registered during the year 2024-25, with about 300 kg of ganja seized and 40 accused booked. “A strict surveillance is there across the district to curb the menace of illegal cultivation of ganja,” he said.
The Additional SP said that the police at the mandal-level had conducted 167 awareness programmes in schools and colleges, besides erecting hoardings and posters at bus stands, railway stations, and public places. Meanwhile, the Collector released the drug prevention awareness publicity material at the meeting.
