A group of BJP leaders, including former MP Locket Chatterjee, sparred with police personnel on Sunday outside the Durgapur medical facility after they were stopped from entering the hospital to meet the second-year MBBS student who was allegedly gangraped.

The BJP leaders agitated over the gates being shut, sparred with the police personnel, and questioned them as to why they were not allowed to meet the survivor. They also accused the West Bengal government and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of authoritarian control and failing to protect women’s rights.

At the hospital gate, Chatterjee expressed strong criticism of the administration’s handling of the situation and said that CM Banerjee is imposing a Taliban-like rule in West Bengal.

“The building is labelled as ‘Emergency’, but it is closed… It is supposed to remain open 24 hours… Because of the Chief Minister’s instructions, the police are inside… Why should the police be inside?… The doctors are outside, the police are inside. Mamata Banerjee’s rule is going on here. A Taliban or Pakistan-like rule is going on here," she said as quoted by news agency ANI.

She further tore into CM Banerjee over her ‘girls shouldn’t be allowed at night remark’, saying that the women of West Bengal will give a befitting reply in next year’s Assembly polls.

“Mamata Banerjee says that no woman should go out to a forest at night because animals can come and eat her… During Operation Sindoor, Sofiya Qureshi and Vyomika Singh went there at night and attacked. Today in West Bengal, a woman CM is asking people not to go out… This is the current condition of the people of West Bengal. The women of West Bengal will answer for this," Chatterjee said as quoted by the news agency.

What’s The Case?

A second-year MBBS student from Odisha was allegedly gangraped by unidentified men near a private medical college in West Bengal’s Durgapur.

According to the medical student’s father, she stepped out with a classmate for dinner. However, two or three other men arrived and raped her. The classmate, he said then “abandoned her and fled."

“At 10 PM, her friend called us and said that your daughter had been raped. We live in Jaleshwar. My daughter was studying here. Yesterday, one of her classmates took her out on the pretext of getting something to eat, but when two or three other men arrived, he abandoned her and fled."

“They raped her… This incident occurred between 8:00 and 9:00 PM. The hostel was far away, and she had come here to eat. The security arrangements are not sufficient… Such a serious incident occurred, but no action has been taken. There is no system here, no response…" the student’s father told reporters.

Earlier on Saturday, Deputy Magistrate and SDO Durgapur, Ranjana Roy, said that the student is in stable condition and her mother is with her.

After meeting the student, Roy said that she is receiving full support and assured that action will be taken.

Earlier today, three people, identified as Sk Riaz Uddin, Sk Firdoush and Appu, were arrested. They were produced before a Durgapur court, where they were remanded to ten days of police custody.
