Afghan soldiers and Taliban-affiliated militiamen paraded pants and rifles seized from captured Pakistani troops in the downtown areas of major Afghan cities this week.

Videos showing the militiamen and soldiers standing atop car hoods while displaying the pants and rifles have gone viral on social media. News18 could not independently verify the authenticity of these clips.

The display comes amid a fragile 48-hour ceasefire declared on Wednesday by Afghanistan and Pakistan, after fresh cross-border skirmishes left dozens of troops and civilians dead.

Afghan journalist Daud Junbish shared a now-viral photo, saying the display took place in the eastern Nangarhar province. Other circulating videos show four soldiers holding the pants of captured Pakistani soldiers.

“Empty trousers recovered from abandoned military posts of the Pakistani army near the Durand Line displayed in eastern Nangarhar province, Afghanistan," Junbish wrote on X.

The truce began at 6:00 pm Islamabad time (1300 GMT), shortly after both sides announced it, each claiming the other had requested it to halt the surge in violence.

The recent clashes followed Pakistani airstrikes in Kabul, reportedly targeting a Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) leader, a group Pakistan accuses Afghanistan of harbouring. In retaliation, Afghan forces attacked border posts along the Durand Line, the 2,640-kilometre international boundary between the two countries.

Afghanistan has alleged that Pakistan uses its army and state apparatus to support attacks by the Islamic State’s local branch, the Islamic State Khorasan group.

Both sides have claimed to have killed dozens of opposing soldiers during the skirmishes.

Both sides have claimed to have killed dozens of opposing soldiers. Afghanistan has also accused Pakistani forces of targeting Afghan civilians, echoing earlier warnings by Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif. Before carrying out airstrikes in Kabul earlier this month, Asif had cautioned of potential “collateral damage" and framed Pakistan as a victim of cross-border terrorism.

Pakistan did not give a toll for its losses in the latest clashes but said last week 23 of its troops had been killed in the opening skirmishes, Taliban ruled Afghanistan claims that over 58 were killed and hundreds captured.
