Tamil Nadu Director General of Police and Head of the Police Force Sandeep Rai Rathore has directed district Superintendents of Police not to take instructions from police officers who were not in the chain of command.

In a note to senior police officers across the State, Dr. Rathore said districts SPs and those in Special Units had been receiving instructions related to official work from various officers who were not in their direct chain of command.

He asked the supervisory officers to report such matters of transgressions to him.

Mr. Rathore also instructed officers heading Special Units and Law & Order to immediately communicate to him and their immediate superiors any important issue developing within their respective jurisdictions. In case of paucity of time or connectivity issues, they could even drop a message through messaging platforms.

In video-conference held with all Zonal Inspector-Generals of Police, Commissioners of Police and SPs, he said all steps in compliance with the Model Code of Conduct should be taken to ensure a free and fair election. Elaborate security arrangements were imperative in the run up to the elections, more so, with VIPs travelling across the State, police sources said.

Reviewing the preparedness of the force for the April 23 polling and May 4 counting of votes, Mr. Rathore called for intensified vigil in places with a history of violence during elections and along inter-State borders to prevent the movement of suspicious persons, transport of liquor and cash flow, the sources said.
