In the 2021 Assembly elections, the DMK-led alliance secured a decisive victory with 158 seats, paving the way for MK Stalin to take office as Chief Minister.

Tamil Nadu is heading towards an intensely competitive, bipolar contest in the 2026 Assembly elections, with the ruling DMK-led front and the AIADMK-led alliance locked in a neck-and-neck battle, according to the latest Vote Tracker opinion poll by VoteVibe, released exclusively on CNN-News18.
The pre-poll survey projects the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led alliance, comprising the Congress, CPI, and CPI(M), to win between 113 and 123 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly.
The rival All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led front, which includes the BJP, is also forecast to secure an identical seat range of 106 to 116, making the outcome too close to call.
Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, is expected to make a modest debut, with projections placing it between 2 and 8 seats.
Mixed Verdict On DMK Govt
Public assessment of the DMK government’s performance over the past five years is sharply divided.
Around 40% of respondents rated the government’s work as “good" or “very good," while nearly 39% described it as “poor" or “very poor," pointing to a polarised electorate.
Women respondents were notably more positive than men, who emerged as harsher critics.
Voters aged 55 and above expressed the highest levels of satisfaction, while younger voters in the 18–24 age group were more critical.
Among social groups, SC/Dalit respondents viewed the government most favourably, whereas upper-caste Hindus were the most dissatisfied. Minority communities reported above-average satisfaction levels.
CM Race Too Close To Separate
The preferred Chief Minister race mirrors the broader electoral tightness. Incumbent Chief Minister MK Stalin leads marginally with 39.9% support, just ahead of AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami at 37.5%.
Gender and age patterns show clear splits: men tend to favour Palaniswami, while women back Stalin, though opposition women voters appear divided between the AIADMK and TVK.
Vijay draws noticeable support among younger voters, particularly those aged 18–24. Older voters largely consolidate behind Stalin, while middle-aged voters tilt toward Palaniswami. SC/Dalit voters prefer Stalin, OBCs and upper-caste Hindus lean toward Palaniswami, and Muslim and Christian voters show a clear preference for the DMK leader.
Key Issues Shaping The Contest
Alcoholism and drug abuse top the list of voter concerns at 20.1%, followed by women’s safety (17.8%), law and order (17.3%), and unemployment (15.5%).
Substance abuse is the leading concern among youth and middle-aged voters, while unemployment resonates strongly with younger voters and SC/Dalit communities.
Corruption figures more prominently among upper-caste Hindus, while women’s safety cuts across demographic groups.
Language imposition emerges as a notable issue among voters aged 55 and above, while rising prices are a key concern among Muslim respondents. Concerns over threats to the federal structure remain relatively marginal overall.
Bipolar Contest Dominates Perception
A plurality of respondents, 41.2%, see the election as a fully bipolar contest between the DMK and AIADMK, while 18.7% view it as somewhat triangular with TVK as a third force.
Only 12% perceive the race as fully triangular, suggesting Vijay’s party has yet to establish itself as a credible third pole in public perception.
In the 2021 Assembly elections, the DMK-led alliance secured a decisive victory with 158 seats, paving the way for MK Stalin to take office as Chief Minister.
Five years on, the latest opinion poll indicates a far tighter battle, with Tamil Nadu poised for one of its closest electoral contests in recent memory.
